I wrote this one some time ago, very few have ever read it, but I wanted to share it today.
The Indian And The Eagle

There was an old Indian,
Beneath an old oak tree,
With nary a whisper,
He turned to look at me,
His eyes glittered,
Like the moon on the sea,
But it had to be a trick,
From the shade of the tree,
For they told of his life,
Without speaking a word,
And the lines in his face,
Told of stories never heard,
I saw a ghost of a smile,
Which had shattered my world,
For it looked as fragile,
As the wings of a bird,
My heart reached out,
To embrace his soul,
When I saw the broken dreams,
That had framed his goal,
I never thought my life,
Was ever truly whole,
Until I saw his eyes,
Had mirrored his soul,
My eyes began to water,
But he gently silenced me,
When he pointed a finger,
Out beyond the tree,
So I  hushed up,
And strained to clearly see,
What it was exactly,
He pointed out for me,
And out in the bushes,
Just as clear as day,
Was a beautiful eagle,
Just enjoying the rays,
My breath caught fast,
As it swiftly flew away,
Never will I forget,
All I saw this day,
When I looked up,
He was smiling at me,
That lone old Indian,
Beneath the old oak tree,
I may not know,
What his story may be,
But I know like the eagle,
He is majestic and free.

Now that's a poem worth remembering.

Come on up my way;  you'll have bald eagles flying into your vision as numerouly as did the stars on a cloudless night before your arrival.']]

In other words, up here, we got em so plentiful....they're getting to be almost like pests.  Another two years and we'll be swiping them off our shores the same way NYC folks swipe the pigeons off their windowsills.....

Bald eagles are surely gorgeous birds....with a shriek that will, if you let it, make you go deaf from it's horribleness.  Not to mention that if they decide YOU are the one the need to attack---you'll be dead from one swipe of talon on your throat....  Many, if not most, bald eagle websites will tell you that bald eagles are shy creatures, afraid of humans.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

These birds are PREDATORS.  CARNIVORS!!!!  Remember what that means!!!!!  Meat eating predators!!!!!   They are indeed magnificent.  But they are not shyly magnificent, as so many left-leaning "authorities" would have you believe.  To wit:

The Lackawaxen River behind my building is a shallow, fairly swiftly moving river, some 50 feet wide.  Some 30 yards "north" of my building a concrete bridge, two lanes wide, runs across the river.  About 6 years ago the state decided to improve the condition of  the bridge by repaving the two lanes and reinforcing the bridge structure.  Early in May, jackhammers starting working.  They worked all day.  The noise was deafening.  Midway through this work a pair of eagles flew into the area; took stock of the area, and, despite the jackhammers and all the people [construction workers] walking up and down the bridge, the eagles decided to build a nest in a conifer 3/4 of the way up the small mountain on the other side of the river from my building.

Not once did the eagles give a damn about the jackhammers.  No matter how much noise, how much activity, those intrepid birds flew down every morning, early on, right about the time the jackhammers started, onto the river to grab trout.  The eagles--they didn't give a crap about noise; humans, or anything else.  These birds are not fragile, as the leftist enviornmentalist would have you believe.  They are powerful predators.  Meat eaters.  If one of these birds decided to have me for lunch, here;s what it would do:  It would swoop down on me, pass one single talon along one side of my neck, puncture my carotid artery--and let me bleed to death.  Then, because I'm a bit too heavy for it to carry, it would signal it's relatives down to the shore where they would all pluck as meat from my carcass as they could and fly off with it to tree branches where it would be least likely to be noticed to feast on the meat of my bones.

Make no mistake about it; bald eagles are not sweet, loveable ctritters.  They are mighty predators that could kill a human being, if they so chose, in an instant.  Yes, they are magnificent.  Yes, if you haven't seen them soaring up close, yoiu want to.  But no, you do not want to try to pet the ones that live in wild where all of them should be living.
