Okay, this really upset me. I just got a letter from my landlord today that My Germany flag and 2 Signs that say 'Hamburg' and 'Berlin' need to be removed from my window!
When has it become wrong to put up something you like that is not offensive? None of them have offensive languages on them at all! I put them up because it is my favorite country and because I like to decorate with things I like.
Someone tell me why my neighbors are allowed to have signs up that says 'Welcome' or other decorative items. They also put up American flags, and none of them get griped at. Yet, the moment I put up my Germany items I get in trouble!
This makes no sense to me and it makes me mad that I am not allowed the same freedom of expression for my own tastes that everyone else is allowed here. So sue me if I am different and do not like the same things everyone else here does. So sue me if I am different and have no problems showing it. Why are they that bothered that my interests lies in foreign countires and cultures? Just because none of them are interested in it does not mean they have any right to deny me mine.
Ugh just let me have my freedom to express my interests as long as I continue to not bother anyone. I never mess with people here, I do not talk to anyone here...... but this time I am sick of letting it roll off my back. I am tired of people thinking that just because I smile and do not join in their drama that it means I am an easy target. I may be a pacifist and I may avoid drama, but that does not mean that if I am pushed far enough that I will not make things difficult. Quite frankly, I am thisclose to letting them see how difficult I can be... yet, there is a part of me that does not want to bother because they are not worth wasting time on.
Maybe I should just continue to sit back, grin and bear it, and when I get the first opportunity to get out of here then they can kiss my derriere goodbye. Screw this town and this state. I hate it here.
Sorry for the rant, but it really got to me today. Sometimes it helps me to get it off of my chest. Sometimes just talking, people listening, or advice can help me to see my way clearly. I really do not want any drama, but at the same time I do not want them to think I am a pushover. Any idea how to handle this? Also, can anyone tell me why people have to bother the one person who is different and does not follow what everyone else is doing? Why bother the one person who has no qualms about being different and proud enough of it to show it?
I hate that people keep trying to get me to follow their conformist ways... to follow their idea on how I should be. Excuse me, no thanks, I prefer to not follow the flock like lost, stupid sheep. I do not want to be someone who is nothing but a humanoid version of a robot where everything is automatic and the same. Psshh screw that. I may not like everything they like, but they have no right to tell me that I am wrong just because I do not want to share their beliefs or ways. It does not make me wrong to do what I love to do. I do not complain to them for liking what they do or for believing what they do. I just let them be and respect the fact they are different, even though I do not want to be like them.
Any advice or opinions will be greatly appreciated. I feel sort of torn on what to do about it. I do not want to start anything that will get me kicked out or cause animosity between myelf and people in this complex, but I also do not want them to think they can shove me around.

AILALYNN, I HOPE YOU'LL FORGIVE A REAL QUICK HIJACK!!!! Bill, Native Americans being in tune with nature is putting it most mildly. I love that you made this comment. I just want to add that all American "Indian" tribes were not simply in tune with nature, they WERE ONE WITH NATURE. The lives they led before White folks interfered were astoundingly complex and rich, and I think we'd all be better off if we took the time to truly understand and appreciate the 10,000 years plus of cultural richness the White race so ignorantly trampled over and drove into near oblivion. Okay....back to our regularly scheduled program. Pat

Interesting Willow and it does make sense as the Zuni's were around long before the Nazis. I still won't buy anything with that symbol on it; regardless of who copied who. I have never seen it on anything Hopi and I do have a nice collection of Hopi art hanging in my home. I am sure you are aware that the Hopi's are surrounded by the Navajo's; mostly in NE. Arizona. The Navajos are very progressive and the Hopi's tend to try and maintain their ancesteral heritage. A lot of their villages are only opened to outsiders at certain times. And yes the Native Americans were dealt a terrible hand and got a very raw deal. Portrayed as savages when for the most part they had very rich cultures and were extremely in tune with nature...

@ rmac22 Ja, he said it was. I found out that it was mainly the 2 neighbors who are notorious for causing issues with other tenants here and at their old apartments - Along with 2 of their friends. (He could not tell me who it was, but my cousin, who lives here too, told me. She is good at finding stuff out.) I had a long talk with the landlord and he agreed to let me put my flag back up (yay!) as long as I do not place my signs back up... I am okay with that. He said that he is not offended by the flag at all. He also said that none of the other tenants except those 4 seem to be bothered by it either. I can only assume he talked to the others and made sure of that before agreeing to let me put it back up? Who knows, but I am not going to worry about it. I wish I could get these 4 people to not be so hateful and have animosity floating around, but apparently, from what I have been told by several others is that this is just the way these people are. *shrugs* I guess I will continue to ignore them as usual. That is probably the best that I can do. Maybe in time when I continue to not let myself lash back at them, then they will warm up. I am beginning to think that it may be they feel they 'run the place' so to speak since they have been here so long. Who knows, really. I am just relieved to find out that I am not the only one being targeted by them, even if they are just focusing on me right now. It will come to pass in time. I just need to let it blow over. I have never been to Kingston, but have been to Albany and New York City. I would love to see if there are any German expatriate communities near me, it can possibly help me with learning the language much better. It is difficult when you have to teach yourself and do not have anyone to help you correct your mistakes. That is okay though, I still love learning it. :-D

Did your landlord say that your neighbors complained? If not it might be just him. Unfortunately, as landlord, he can impose rules on you, but your neighbors may not mind at all.
If it is your neighbors complaining it is one kind of problem, your landlord another.
I had a bit of a neighbor issue a few years back. Thankfully, that is over. Now warm and friendly. Cheerful greetings. Nice not to have hate and animosity radiating in my direction.
I lived in a huge German expatriate community in Kingston New York some years back. It may still be like that. They imported German soccer teams to compete there for their amusement. Wealthy people. Everywhere you went, there were little German restaurants. Wonderful German beer on tap everywhere. Unless you spoke German, you might not understand the conversation at the next table. Not everyone was a German expatriate, but they were a significant part of it.. They completely flavored the place.

Checkmate. You just won the war??? I didn't realize that this was a war or even a competition. When you rant and rave in a public forum you invite the comments of others. It is not my fault that you come across as a very unhappy person. You are the one who has issues with your neighbors and hates the town and state she lives in. Of course it's all their fault. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with you. BON VOYAGE. Best of luck with your new cable hookup...

You really have nerve to assume I have a bad attitude. I beg to differ. I strive to treat others fairly. I generally avoid drama and help others when I can. I generally keep my mouth shut and let things roll off of my back, BUT I will speak up if pushed too far. I did not once call you names or throw stones at you. One should not throw stones in a glass house you know. You have done so in your last comment. So, here I am, speaking up.
Speaking of bad attitudes –
You come marching in here, and completely overlook the question I was actually asking, and proceeded to turn everything into a debate that had nothing to do with the question my original post asked.
What? I’m sorry. Did you ask what I originally asked? No? Well let me tell you what you so obviously chose to ignore. “WHY DO PEOPLE FEEL THE NEED TO TREAT OTHERS SO POORLY?”
That was the gist of it. Did you see the question that time? Good.
In fact, I never said everyone acted that way. In fact I said ‘people’ meaning the people who do act as such. I said I have met nice people and interesting people. I simply do not understand those who find it amusing to treat others like dirt.
Guess what? You came in acting all high and mighty, arrogant, condescending, and chose to bait me into a debate that had nothing to do with the psychological/sociological question of human actions.
In fact, the more I tried to make myself and my point more clearly understood without more room for misunderstanding, the more you twisted it into what you wanted to see.
Since you have shown yourself to me to be arrogant, looking down your nose, and ignorant in how to talk to or treat a woman …. Exactly like the people I initially asked about. Since you seem to be similar to them, tell me Mr. high-and-mighty-holier-than-thou, why is it people like you and them feel the need to get your jollies off acting so despicably towards others? Do you really feel better about yourself when you do that?
I do not think I am a victim, I was merely expressing a question about something I cannot understand and cannot fathom being. You obviously did not understand that.
Sure, I fell for your bait and entered into the game you wanted to play of controversial debate.
That was a battle you won, I will give you that.
BUT this is the last thing I will say to you in this blog. I am not rising to your bait anymore. I will no longer play your game. You have been figured out. You can continue to be scathing towards the other younger people you treat in the same manner in other blogs. I will no longer provide you with the jolly you seek in doing so.
So, in that one move, I have just won the war.
Checkmate. Off with you.

Sophie's right Lynn. You should reread some of your stuff. You make it sound like you are a chronic victim and the whole world is always against you. Good luck on your move to Germany. I have a feeling that when you get there you will find having cable TV hooked up will not be your major problem. Your real problem is that wherever you go; that is where you and your terrible attitude will be...

I think you misunderstand. I do not hate anyone... maybe hate was too strong of a word to use for this place, but I was merely expressing my dislike for where I live. I was not attempting to express hatred for anyone at all... please reread more and see between the lines to what I am actually saying. I was stating that I cannot understand why people have to cause trouble for others when no one is doing anything to bother them. These same people who complained about the flag are also notorious for causing otehr problems for people, this includes lying to get people kicked out if they do not like them. They do it here and they did it in their old apartments. I was merely questioning why people like that have to feel the need to target people all the time for stupid things that really should not be bothered with. I DO however hate the way people have acted toward me, I DO hate the way they choose to treat others, I DO hate how this town tends to flock together against 'outsiders'.... You see, there are no blacks here for the town has chased them out, I am the only person n the town who has been deaf since birth instead of by aging... and since I have been here in this town people have tried to cause trouble for me left and right even though I talk to no one here. I am originally from Florida. I left to be with family here. Also, because there was way too many bad and painful memories for me there; My very first best friend being murdered was one of them. I have not been to Germany yet, but do plan to move there. I have several friends from Finland and Germany and all have been so welcoming, have had good thigns to say, People I know who have travelled there have had nothing but good to remark about being there. Yes, I already know that to be able to get services you should know German - like how sometimes to order cable it can be slow to get it and might take months (especially in February), but if you know the langauge it is much easier to get it. I knew this and I am okay with that. I have travelled to 20 states of the USA so far... I have met some nice people, some intersting people, but many more cruel people. A lot of people turn their noses up at deaf people, you would be surprised how much I face often. I do not actually HATE the people... just their actions. I do not understand why many of them must treat those who are different (deaf or whatever) so badly. I do not treat them the same way they treat me. So, I was merely questioning what makes people like those act as they do. and the reason I hate this state is because I have been here for 10 years and it has caused me nothing but grief, the only good that I have found here is my daughter. Yet, I continue to sit back, smile, and let it roll off of my back, I never say anything back to anyone, I just simply go back inside and leave them be. If you see that as hatred, please don't. That was not my intention and I hope you can now understand what I am actually trying to say.

"The Zunis have a symbol that is a duplicate of the Swastika "
Sorry billzeke, just a little correction ..... I understand the point you are trying to make, but, just for "origination" correction ..... The symbol used by the Natzi regime, the swastika, is the DUPLICATE OF A ZUNI ANCIENT SYMBOL.
Actually, it is a symbol that has been used by many Tribes/Nations of the Indian People, including some like the Aztec, Mayan, Kickapoo, Hopi, Pottawatomie, and most of the Plains Indian Nations. And it has been in many ancient cultures all over the world, including Iceland, ancient Rome, early Germany (around 1870 - used as a symbol of extreme nationalism in the Austrian-Pan German movement) and the Norse sections, and also embroidered on christian vestaments in the 8th and 9th centuries. It is also an ancient type of sun dial design. The natzi, ie, Hitler, borrowed the symbol, it is speculated, from books he collected in his earlier days from the books on the 'wild wild west' and the "redman" of the U.S. He was an afficianado of Cowboy books and facinated by Native American Art, and, had quite a selection. It is also speculated that he took the symbol from one of the multitude of ancient history books he studied. There are also two versions of this symbol - a right directional and left directional - the direction of the "arms" at the ends of the lines. It was originally drawn for Hitler in the right directional mode, but, Hitler changed it to the left for some reason.
Sad that such an ancient symbol has to be relagated to the horrific history of Hitler, and in modern times displayed by radical racist groups and only remembered as such and, because of social reasons, keeps people from collecting or purchasing American Indian articles such as amazing baskets and pottery that are works of Art and part of an amazing culture.
For many Indian nations it is the symbol of hope, a symbol of birth, goodness and enrichment, a sign that symbolizes blessings from Creator. It is also found on the soles of the Buddha's feet, in statuary. I just mention this because the swastica is sort of like the "runes" on the drapes I mentioned previously. Just noted for "posterity" ......hahahahaha ...... Sorry, Lynn, for venturing, again, "off topic" so to say.
Oh, in addition, your comment of "We return the captured lands and go home..." Which, for the most part, as concerns Foreign countries in which our soldiers bravely fought and now fight for freedom, YES, this is True. I have a son in Iraq fighting the Terrorist regime.
In our own not so glorious times in history, I'm sure the Native Americans would argue this comment..... ~grins~
Being proud of your heritage and flaunting it are 2 very different things. I am not referring only to the Jews as they are not the only ones that might be offended. Many decendents of a lot of European countries that the Germans steam rolled over might be offended. What about long time military families who lost loved ones fighting the Germans. A whole lot of them live in the Southeast. The Blacks considered inferior by the German Aryans might also be offended. Joe Lewis did a lot to squash that theory in the 2nd Schmeling/Lewis fight when JL knocked Max Schmeling out in the 2nd round and sent him to a hospital. The White southern folks have mostly given up their tradition of flying the Confederate flag; once a symbol of the Old South, because it offended Black people. It's not always about crossing the "t's" and dotting the "i'S in a lease or a contract. Sometimes it is about using common sense in hopes of speading unity and getting along with ones neighbors. Your flag wouldn't bother me at all. Building a mosque 2 blocks from the World Trade Center does piss me off. I sure hope it doesn't get built as it will do nothing but stir up even more controversy and hatred in that neighborhood. Many Native American tribes find sports team logos to be offensive and want them to be changed. ie: Atlanta Braves, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians etc. The Zunis have a symbol that is a duplicate of the Swastika that is incorporated into many of their weavings. It has a much different meaning; but I would never buy anything with that insignia on it no what the meaning was. As far as things the U.S. has done wrong; sure there are a few. You don't see us running around waving our flag in other countries and you don't see us building a shrine in Hiroshima. We return the captured lands and go home...

Wa La !! Residency in rental / lease venues has it's perks as well as limitations with regard to "public" acceptance of personal tastes. Obviously they read the lease too. I was reading some things last week, tidbits of humor on a website, wherein there was a "controversy" regarding publically displayed window treatments. In this case, the drapes in the windows had a lining (the part that faces the outside) that displayed what the management deemed as "advertisement". It was symbols that are commonly called 'Runes'.
The managers of the complex received several complaints regarding the "offensive" use of the symbols and accused the new occupants of the apartment as being involved in and advertising witchcraft.
The occupants of the apartment, a couple, were, in fact, when details emerged, both linguists, with PhD's, and specializing in evolutional and historic linguistics ..... what was on the lining and quite visible to the public were runic symbols of a document that is part of a historical linguistics study (they participated in this). People considered it as advertisement of "witchcraft"??? hahahaha ... "Runes", seemingly in today's society, are misconstrued as having to do with or associated with Witch language...hahaha .... I think, simply because so many followers/participants in "witchcraft" have utilized it as such, in that it is considered a 'secret' language supposedly. When, in fact, it is an alphabet of sorts displayed as "symbols" which dates waayyyy back before the Latin alphabet emerged. hmmmm .... Historically, as explained by the two professors, our English word "rune" is, in no way, originating from Witchcraft. It has been "adopted" by followers pretty far back, but, the true "runes" are actually letters and/or groupings of lines and curves representing "letters" and part of a Germanic language dating around circa 150-550 AD.... anyway ... The couple was asked to remove the drapes or lining as it was "offensive" to some of the residents and considered "advertisement" of a "suspected" business of witchcraft?????????
I'm sure there are some experts on the site and perhaps my explanation is not exact and completely "professionally correct", but, it is how I understood the explanation. End result .... the drapes remained. Perhaps a bit off topic of your original blog, but, your blog about "offensive window treatments" brought that article back to my thoughts .... as to public opinion of "offensive"...... my ramblings for the day ......
Quoting AilaLynn
I did go over it... I also talked to the landlord. Decoratives and displays are allowed unless it can be deemed offensive. Dcoratives and displays advertising businesses are not allowed. I guess a few people here took offense in what I had up *sighs*.
Also, remember the issue I told you about the other day that I am having with neighbor? Well, I found out which neighbor it was...it IS the ones I thought it was...Those neighbors also happen to be one of the ones who complained about my 'offensive' displays.
I guess I have to deal and suck it up for a while until I can get out of here.
That is okay, I hung my German signs on my living room wall. I asked the landlord if I could at least do that. He said that was okay, but I just couldn't have it be viewable outside since a few residents complained.

@ Billzeke Well in my opinion it was not offensive. The neighbors who complained are not Jewish.I had no symbols of pro-nazi or anything of that sort. I find nothing offensive about being proud to display different cultural objects. The Germans are people too, just like Americans. Sure, their history is not the best in some areas.... but neither is ours. I still find it a beautiful country, cuture, language, and people. To even judge the people because of their history and to be offended by anything from their culture is wrong to me. It is rather closed minded. To find their culture offensive, to me is offensive in itself. I can sit here and tell you about the hand AMERICA had in helping with the Holocaust, I can tell you all sorts of things AMERICA has done and still continues to do.... why not look at our own country and face up to facts that we are not perfect. It is not my fault if others do not want to see the beauty of different places and ways of life. If they want to choose to be ignorant and blame people for a past they had no part of then that is their business, but I refuse to take that same action. If me showing my love for other places is wrong, then I will continue to be wrong.... and happily so. I also collect stuff from other countries besides Germany. Thus, my displaying a fondness for other cultures is not wrong... it is simply me showing that I have an interest in something. That said, considering none of my neighbors are Jewish (in fact the complainers are Atheists), I had no offensive words or symbols..... Tell me how can you even consider my displays to be offensive? As far as displaying a Japanese flag near Pearl Harbor.... that is pearl harbor.... What does Germany have to do with North Carolina? and a town full of baptists? Absolutely nothing.
P.S. I am of German heritage as well as Native American. When I had objects of Native American culture not one person complained.... but the moment I placed anything of my German heritage up with it, the compalints came filing in. I am not going to apologize for being proud of my heritage... we should all be proud of what we descend from and should not be ashamed to show it.

"There is no darker place than the depths of your very own soul. Drink deeply from within, awaken, and be free."
There is something to be said for acting appropriately, acting in good taste and having some respect for the sensativities of others. It shouldn't be too hard to imagine how displaying a German flag would be offensive to some people in this country. The same could be said for displaying a Japanese flag especially if it was displayed anywhere near Pearl Harbor...

First, and foremost, read your lease contract with Eagle eyes, every word, every phrase. See if there is a clause, even an obscure one, that limits, in any way, window displays, outside displays that are seen by the public within the complex. Many complexes and communities do have clauses in the lease contract that specify what are "no no's" for outside decorations, displays, etc. If there is not a clause in your lease contract, then, I would question the legality of it. Being me, if there is nothing in the lease contract, then I would be asking the "landlord" where in your lease it says you cannot display other countries flags or anything relating to this type of decoration.
While it is true, unfortunately, that many apartment communities have "neighborhood groups" that seem to think they have the right to dictate what the residents can and cannot do, these rules and regulations must be posted pubically and presented to tenants at lease signing. Apartment communities are, many times, strict on outside decorations, but, it is also stated in the lease and by signing the lease you are agreeing to their terms and conditions.
That is the "legal" part. Then, you have the busy bodies that THINK they can dictate to others because they have resided there longer. Legally, they can't. And any apartment management person or company will know that. Unless the management has legal grounds to send you the letter, the manager should have informed the "complainers" that there no rule or regluation that prohibits displays of other country flags, nor any other display in windows seen by the public that (pay close attention to the phrase) MAY be offensive to other residents or the apartment owners, managers, or the general public. This is a catch all phrase in many lease agreements. It's a loop hole like many contracts have. Personally, I think that some make it their duty in life to cause problems. It is possible that there are tenants of the Jewish faith that find ANYTHING to do with Germany offensive, even harmless flags or signs or anything German. It is possible that this was the cause of the complaint. More than likely it is one person or couple that have decided to complain that your decorations are "out of taste and offensive" so to say, according to their lifestyle, religion, or otherwise. It is the apartment management organization or person that must determine if it is in conflict with your lease, and not the personal wishes of one resident.
This is the "land of the free" and we do have constitutional rights, but, when you rent, there are legalities in lease contracts that many do not notice or just tend to not read the contracts because they like the apartment or living space they are going to rent. Usually, like iI said, it will be an obscure phrase or paragraph that is probably in small print, or mixed in with other information. Welcome signs on or above doorways, flowers, potted plants, chairs, patio items, American flags (this is America) and such are not considered to be offensive unless they do not follow the conditions of such display rules within the lease contract. Some apartment complex communities forbid BBQ cooking, outside grills or anything to do with it, or, the covering of windows with "offensive materials" - another loop hole for them if someone complains that it is offensive and they want to accomodate certain higher paying or long time tenants - the money thing you know.
I would be angry myself. I would be pulling the lease contract out and reading it. Then, if there is not a clause or paragraph that addresses "offensive or disallowed" displays in the outside of or in the windows of the apartment complex, I would be politely copying the lease contract with a rebuttal letter asking the legal cause for such a letter. But, that is just me......hahahahaha My two cents.......... I do not like being bullied or pushed around either. Show me the paper !!!
