Just out of wondering. I remember someone on here managed to get a flight upgrade to first class just by talking to a guy at the desk.
I may be going to South Africa during the xmas holidays. I would be flying economy- although my parents when they went selected a WorldTraveler option which cost more but it meant they might get upgraded which they did to business class. However as I'm flying at peak times the prices are very expensive. So I'm not paying extra for that. Are there any tips in how to get an upgrade? Is it just a question of asking? I know my chances may be zilch due to a busy time of year but what do you suggest?
Does anyone work for an airline here?
sarah :-)

That sounds like fun! I have found with most international flights that I can pay at the desk for an ungrade. But...if you are in the middle of the holiday season , that may not work) Most upgrades into the next level up were around $50 each way. (I do not know what they might be now.) You need to get them the day of travel and the attendent will tell you if there are any available. Avoid the economy seats in the back if you can, There are often two levels of economy. The back seats are very small and crampled. The next level up has a little more room but is VERY worth it for those long flights.

Lol conyersguy- no I'm not willing to lower my standards. :-p
My tickets are booked now. I'm flying by KLM which takes me from Edinburgh to Amsterdam and then to Cape Town. The other option was Edinburgh to Paris, Paris to jo berg then to cape town but I couldn't face 2 connections plus it was more expensive too.
I guess there is no harm in asking but yeah chances are prob slim. This will be the furthest I've travelled and alone.
I've already started looked at trips. Soo much to do there. I'm thinking of doing a couple of crazy things like- cage diving with great whites and abseiling down table mountain- hehe. Although I think the latter will be more scary. I'm not afraid of heights but I imagine I will be then. I'd love to visit the cango caves but that 4 1/2 hrs away and often that?s a 3 day trip up the garden route which I may not have time to do.

Love the humor, Conyers. That's called using what you've got -- including brains, of course -- Ha!
Your chance for an upgrade during peak travel periods is iffy. But here again, it never hurts to ask. Santa works in mysterious ways, you know, especially if you've been a good little girl. Sounds like a great trip, either way you go. Good luck!

Theres only 2 Airlines flying direct down to Capetown, you dont say where your going to, but Christmas time isnt the time to get an upgrade, you'll be lucky if you get upgrade from outside to inside !!!

Wear an inflatable cast if it's a female desk attendant.¿¿ Wear a low cut top under a light jacket.¿ Keep the jacket buttoned¿for the female attendant.¿¿If it's a male attendant, take the jacket off before you limp up to the counter, need lots of help, and bend over frequently.:):)
